Kaffraria, South‐East Africa A coastal region colonized by the British and Portuguese, in particular Xhosa territory. The name comes from the Arabic
kāfir ‘infidel’ or ‘pagan’, the Xhosa derogatorily being called Kaffirs. The Xhosa and Zulu languages used to be called Kaffrarian. The British part became a crown colony in 1847 and in 1865 was incorporated into Cape Colony.
