Ivano‐Frankivs'k, Ukraine Stanisławów, Stanislav, Ivano‐Frankovsk A province and city founded in 1661 as a Polish frontier town and named after a Polish prince, Stanislav (Stanisław in Polish), who owned land here. Between 1772 and 1918 it was held by Austria. It then became Polish until being annexed by the Soviet Union as a result of the Soviet–Nazi non‐aggression pact in 1939. It was ceded to the Soviet Union (Ukraine) in 1945 and named Stanislav. In 1962 it was renamed Ivano‐Frankovsk after Ivan Franko (1856–1910), Ukrainian poet and novelist. The spelling was slightly changed after Ukraine received its independence in 1991.
