Illinois, USA 1. A state named after the Algonquian‐speaking Illini people, their name simply meaning ‘men’. First explored by two Frenchmen, Louis Jolliet (1645–1700) and Jacques Marquette (1637–75) in 1673, Illinois was ceded to Great Britain in 1763. In 1774 it became part of the province of Quebec, but was acquired by the USA in 1783; in 1787 it became part of the Northwest Territory. When the Northwest Territory was partitioned in 1800, Illinois became a part of Indiana Territory. In 1809, when Indiana Territory was divided, Illinois became a territory in its own right before joining the Union as the 21st state in 1818.2. There are three rivers with this name in Illinois, Oklahoma, and Oregon.
