Ifni, Morocco A former Spanish coastal province, the name is derived from the Tuareg
isaffen, the plural of
asif ‘water’. The fort of Santa Cruz de Mar Pequeña was taken over by the Spanish crown in 1476 but was lost to the Moors in 1524. It was regained in 1860, but the area was not occupied and developed by the Spanish until 1934. In 1969 the province was ceded to Morocco.
