Guyana The Co‐operative Republic of Guyana since 1970. Previously Guyana when independence was achieved in 1966; the British having acquired Guiana formally at the London Convention in 1814, the name was changed to British Guiana in 1831 when they took over the three Dutch colonies of Berbice, Demerara, and Essequibo; the Dutch had built the first permanent trading post at Essequibo in 1616. Guiana was made a British crown colony in 1928. Guiana and Guyana, an Arawak or Carib word, mean ‘Land of Waters’, probably because of its swampy coastline and many rivers. For the Native Americans the name actually referred to the three Guianas, Dutch Guiana (now Suriname), French Guiana, and Guyana.
