Gao

Gao, Mali Kawkaw A region and a town. Founded in the 7th century on the Niger River, the name comes from the Fulani kunku ‘island’. When the Arabs took control in the 16th century they Arabized the name to Kawkaw which in due course became Gaogao and then, inevitably, Gao.
