Galle, Sri Lanka Point de Galle Founded in the 13th century, it was under Portuguese rule in 1507–1640; it was the capital under Dutch rule until 1656. The name comes from the Sanskrit
galla ‘rock’, perhaps indicating the coastal terrain on which it is situated. However, there is a legend that it was so named after the Portuguese heard a cock,
galo, crowing.
