Galapagos Islands (Spanish: Islas de los Galápagos), EcuadorThe Enchanted (Islands) An Insular Region, the official name is Columbus Archipelago (Spanish: Archipiélago de Colón). The Galapagos consist of a group of islands and islets. They were discovered in 1535 by the bishop of Panama, Tomás de Berlanga, who named them Las Encantadas ‘The Enchanted’. The present name comes from the Spanish
galápago ‘freshwater tortoise’.
