El Jadida, Morocco Mazagan, al‐Brija al‐Jadīda ‘The New’ in Arabic. Developed around a Portuguese fort from 1502, it was known as Mazagan after a tribe, the Mazg'anna, that had once lived in the area. In 1821 it was settled by Moroccan Jews who gave it the Arabic name al‐Brija al‐Jadīda ‘The New Fort’. In due course, this name was shortened.
