El Escorial

El Escorial, Madrid/Spain ‘The Dump’ or ‘The Slag Heap’, a name for the former village and a reference to the residue of the granite quarrying needed in 1563–84 to build the huge monastery‐palace erected as a tomb for his father by Philip II (1527–98), King of Spain (1556–98).
