Dakota, USA Two states, North and South Dakota. A large part of the two states was acquired by means of the Louisiana Purchase from France in 1803; the remainder, the north‐eastern part of North Dakota, following a treaty with the UK in 1818. In 1861 the region became the Dakota Territory. It was split in two in 1889 when both North and South Dakota joined the Union as the 39th and 40th states respectively. The name comes from a Santee word
lakota,
nakota, or
dakota, depending on the dialect, meaning ‘allies’ to describe the confederated Sioux tribes. They gave their name to the famous Douglas DC‐3 transport aircraft, the Dakota.
