Catanzaro, Calabria/Italy Catasarion/Katantzarion Originally founded by the Byzantines in the 10th century as Catasarion, the name may mean ‘Below the Terraces’ from the Greek
cata ‘on’ or ‘near to’ and the Arabic
anzār ‘terrace’, a reference to the orchards and gardens that surrounded the city which overlooks the Ionian Sea.
