Carinthia (Kärnten), Austria A state named after a Celtic tribe living in Karantanija, itself from
kar, a reference to the mountainous area in which they lived. It was the centre of the Celtic Kingdom of Noricum which became a Roman province in 16 bc. An independent duchy in the 10th–13th centuries, it became an Austrian crownland in 1335. A small part was ceded to Slovenia after the First World War (1914–18); its Slovenian name is Koroška.
