Cameroon Kamerun, French Cameroun The Republic of Cameroon (République du Cameroun) since 1984. Previously the United Republic of Cameroon (1972–84); the Federal Republic of Cameroon (1961–72) when the British UN Trust Territory of the Southern Cameroons joined the Republic of Cameroon (1960–1) which gained its independence from France in 1960. From 1946 to 1959 French Cameroun was a UN Trust Territory administered by the French, having been a French League of Nations mandate since 1922. The arrangements for the British Southern and Northern Cameroons (the North joined Nigeria in 1961) mirrored those for French Cameroun. Between 1884 and 1916 the Germans ruled the larger part of Cameroon as the Protectorate of Kamerun. Sailing into the Wouri River estuary at the end of the 15th century, Portuguese explorers found plentiful supplies of prawns and thus named the area Rio dos Camarões ‘River of Prawns’, which was later Anglicized to Cameroons River. There is also a Mount Cameroon.
