California, Peru, Trinidad, USA USA: a state whose name is thought to have literary origins: derived from the Spanish novel Las Sergas de Esplandian (The Exploits of Esplandian) which describes an imaginary island called California. The actual mainland is said to have been so‐called by Hernán Cortés before it was actually sighted by the Spanish navigator, Juan Cabrillo (d. c.1543), the discoverer of California in 1542. Sir Francis Drake named the territory he annexed in 1579 New Albion in what is now California. California became part of Mexico after Mexican independence from Spain in 1821. In 1846 American settlers declared independence and, following the US–Mexican War of 1848, the territory was ceded to the USA. In 1850 it became the 31st state. It gave its name to californium, discovered at the University of California in 1950.
