Calabria, Italy Ager Bruttius/Brutium, Bruzzio A region whose name is derived from a pre‐Indo‐European root word
kal or
kalabra ‘rock’. For 1 000 years up to the end of the 7th century Calabria referred to the south‐eastern ‘heel’ of Italy rather than, as now, to the ‘toe’. The name Calabria came into fashion with the Byzantines.
