Brass, Rivers/Nigeria Tuwon/Twon, Brasstown Lying at the mouth of the Brass River, from which it takes its name, in the Niger delta. The name may come from the previous name of the river, Barasin, believed to mean ‘to release’ which may be connected with its role as a slave‐trading port in the early 19th century. Brasstown was the name coined by Europeans who added to the name of the river the name of the previous settlement—and then corrupted it. An alternative theory as to how the town gots its name concerns a young British officer who, keen to know the name of the place, took the arm of a woman and asked her. Allegedly, she replied ‘Barasi’ ‘Leave me alone’ in Nembe.
