Bosporus (Karadeniz Bogazi), Turkey A strait linking the Black Sea and the Sea of Marmara from
boğaz ‘throat’; Karadeniz means ‘Black Sea’. The English name, sometimes spelt Bosphorus, comes from the Greek and means ‘Ox Ford’ from
bous ‘ox’ and
poros ‘ford’.
