Borisoglebsk

Borisoglebsk, Voronezh/Russia Pavlovskaya Krepost′ Founded in 1646 as ‘Paul's Fortress' from krepost′ ‘fortress’ as a bulwark against the Tatars, although which Paul is not known. It was later renamed after a church dedicated to two brothers, the princes Boris and Gleb, two of several sons of Vladimir the Great (c.956–1015), grand prince of Kiev (980–1015). On Vladimir's death Svyatopolk, their elder half‐brother, determined to consolidate all power in his own hands and ordered the murder of his brothers. To ensure the unity of the nation Boris and Gleb submitted without trying to defend themselves in 1015. They were later revered as the first saints of the Russian Orthodox Church. Another brother, Yaroslav (see Yaroslavl′), defeated Svyatopolk in 1019.
