Bizerta (Bizerte, Banzart), Tunisia Hippo Diarrhytus/Zarytus Also known as Banzart which comes from the Arabic binzart, a corruption of the Low Latin Hippo Zarytus which is itself a corruption of the Greek Hippōn Diarrutos ‘Flowing through the Stables’, a reference to the presence of a nearby stream which supplied water to the stables; from hippōn ‘stable’ and diarrutos ‘flowing through’. Originally a Phoenician settlement, it was captured by the Arabs in 661 and its Roman/Greek name was Arabized. It was held by the Spanish for 37 years during the 16th century and by the French in 1881–1955.
