Bessemer, USA There are three towns in the USA with this name and another called Bessemer City. All are named after Sir Henry Bessemer (1813–98), a British engineer who was the first person to initiate a way to manufacture steel cheaply; it was known as the Bessemer process. The town in Alabama was originally called Fort Jonesboro and was renamed in 1887.
