Asenovgrad, Bulgaria Stanimaka The original name meant ‘Defence of the Mountain Pass’, but the town was renamed in 1230 after Ivan II Asen (d. 1241), Tsar (1218–41), as the ‘City of Asen’ from the personal name, ov ‘of’, and grad, in honour of his victory over the Byzantines at Klokotnitsa.
