Antilles, West Indies Antilia, Antillas A term applied to the whole of the West Indies except for the Bahamas. The Antilles are divided into the Greater Antilles and the Lesser Antilles. The name was coined before Christopher Columbus arrived in the area, possibly by the Florentine (Italian) cosmographer Paolo dal Pozzo Toscanelli who corresponded with Columbus before his great voyage, suggesting that the shortest route to Asia was to the west and a stop could be made en route at the island of Antilia. It is possible that the word is derived from the Latin ante ‘before’, and illas ‘islands’ to suggest islands off the mainland. In 1502 the full name of the islands was given as Las Antillas de Rey de Castella ‘The Antilles of the King of Castile’.
