Alaska, USA A state with a name derived from the Aleut (a branch of the Inuit–Aleut family of languages)
alakshak ‘mainland’. It was first discovered in 1741 by Vitus Bering
†, a Dane leading an expedition for Peter I the Great
†. The first non‐local settlers in 1784 were Russians. Administered by the Russian American Company from 1799, it was known as Russian America. The region was sold by Alexander II, emperor (1855–81), to the USA in 1867 for $7.2 million when it quickly became known as Seward's Folly; William H. Seward was the American Secretary of State who arranged the purchase. It became the Territory of Alaska in 1912 and finally the 49th state when it joined the Union in 1959.
