Ahvaz (Ahwāz), Iran Hormuzd Ardashīr Having rebuilt the town, Ardashīr I, King of the Sāssānians (224–41), named it after himself. It was renamed Suq al‐Ahwāz by the Arabs when they conquered the town during the 7th century to mean ‘Market of the Hūzi’. Ahwāz is the plural of Hūzi which was a local tribe.
