predella
predella (Italian: ‘platform’, ‘altar step’). A small painting or series of paintings beneath the main part of an
altarpiece. Predellas are often found in Italian
polyptychs of the 14th and 15th centuries; they are less common in other countries. By extension, the term is sometimes applied to any subsidiary picture forming an appendage to a larger one.
