fine arts. Term that came into use in the 18th century to describe the ‘higher’ non-utilitarian arts, as opposed to applied or decorative arts. Usually the term is taken to cover painting, sculpture, and architecture (even though architecture is obviously a ‘useful’ art), but it is often extended to cover poetry and music too. See also liberal arts.
