Vertue, George (b London, 17 Nov. 1684; d London, 24 July 1756). English engraver and antiquarian. He was a prolific engraver of portraits and antiquarian subjects (he was appointed official engraver to the Society of Antiquaries in 1717), but he is important chiefly for the voluminous notes he collected relating to the history of art in England (now in the British Library, London). After his death they were bought by Horace Walpole, who used them as a basis for his Anecdotes of Painting in England (1762–71), and the notebooks themselves—an invaluable storehouse of information—were published in six volumes, plus an index, in 1930–50.
