Stuck, Franz von
Stuck, Franz von (
b Tettenweis, Bavaria, 23 Feb. 1863;
d Munich, 30 Aug. 1928). German painter, sculptor, and graphic artist, active mainly in Munich, where he was a founding member of the
Sezession in 1893. In 1895 he became a professor at the Munich Academy, where
Kandinsky and
Klee were among his pupils. His favourite subjects were mythological and allegorical scenes, often treated in a morbidly erotic
Symbolist style: he did at least eighteen pictures of a naked woman entwined with an enormous snake under such titles as
Sensuality,
Sin, and
Vice. He had an extraordinarily high reputation in his day (now badly faded) and enjoyed a princely lifestyle. The house in which he lived in Munich is now a museum dedicated to him. He designed and decorated it, attempting to create the ideal of the
Gesamtkunstwerk (‘total work of art’).
