Society of Artists. An association of artists founded in London in 1760 and incorporated by Royal Charter in 1765 (after which it was known as the Incorporated Society of Artists). It held annual exhibitions and was the main forerunner of the Royal Academy. Hayman and Lambert were leading figures of the society in its early years; it was soon overshadowed by the Academy, but it remained active until 1791.
