Schedoni, Bartolomeo

Schedoni, Bartolomeo (b Formigine, nr. Modena, 1578; d Parma, 23 Dec. 1615). Italian painter and draughtsman, active mainly in Modena, at the Este court, and then from 1607 in Parma, where he was a favourite artist of Duke Ranuccio I Farnese. His work drew on various influences, notably Correggio and the Carracci, but by the end of his short life he had developed a distinctive style characterized by bold lighting, poetic feeling, and a striking use of areas of bright, almost metallic colour (The Three Marys at the Tomb, Gal. Naz., Parma). Although his art is often very tender in sentiment, he had a violent, unstable temperament, and he is said to have died in a ‘fit of passion’ (which perhaps indicates suicide) after a night of heavy gambling losses.
