Pleydenwurff, Hans
Pleydenwurff, Hans (
b ?Bamberg,
c.1425;
d Nuremberg, 9 Jan. 1472). German painter and designer of stained glass, the leading painter of his day in Nuremberg, where he was active from about 1450. His work shows a move away from the
International Gothic style to a more naturalistic idiom influenced by Netherlandish painting. A large
Crucifixion (
c.1470, Alte Pin., Munich) is characteristic of his refined style. Michael
Wolgemut married his widow and later took over his workshop. Pleydenwurff's son
Wilhelm (
d 1494) was a painter and designer of woodcuts, also active in Nuremberg.
