Non-Objective art. General term for abstract art that is intended to be completely non-representational, rather than derived (however remotely or obliquely) from appearances in the world around us; most commonly it is applied to severely geometrical works. The term was coined by Rodchenko, who used it in the title of some of his paintings (Non-Objective Painting: Black on Black, 1918, MoMA, New York), and it is also particularly associated with Malevich.
