Moreau, Louis-Gabriel

Moreau, Louis-Gabriel (b Paris, Jan./Apr. 1740; d Paris, 12 Oct. 1805). French landscape painter and etcher. He was not particularly successful in his time, but he is now recognized as one of the outstanding French landscape painters of the 18th century, the freshness, directness, and sincerity of his work looking forward to the naturalism of Corot. He is often called Moreau the Elder, to distinguish him from his brother Jean-Michel (b Paris, 26 Mar. 1741; d Paris, 30 Nov. 1814), Moreau the Younger, a draughtsman, printmaker, and painter. His output was varied, but he is best known for his drawings and engravings of fashionable manners and morals. Carle Vernet was his son-in-law and Horace Vernet his grandson.
