Malvasia, Count Carlo
Malvasia, Count Carlo (
b Bologna, 18 Dec. 1616;
d Bologna, 9 Mar. 1693). Italian writer and antiquarian. His major work,
Felsina pittrice: vite dei pittori bolognesi (1678), is the most important source for knowledge of the great period of the Bolognese School that began with the
Carracci (Felsina was the Etruscan name for Bologna). It contains a particularly revealing biography of his friend
Reni. Malvasia also wrote a guide to the paintings of Bologna (
Le pitture di Bologna, 1686), one of the first books of its kind.
