Knoedler's

Knoedler's (M. Knoedler & Co.), New York. Firm of art dealers that traces its origin to 1846 when Michel (or Michael as he was later known) Knoedler (d 1878) moved from Paris to New York to manage a branch of the French firm Goupil. In 1857 he bought the business and prospered selling American paintings. His son Roland opened branches in London and Paris, and by the turn of the century the firm was one of the world's leading dealers in Old Masters, a position it has maintained through various changes of ownership and location. It also deals in modern art, especially by American artists.
