Knight, Richard Payne
Knight, Richard Payne (
b Wormsley Grange, Herefordshire, 11 Feb. 1751;
d London, 23 Apr. 1824). English collector, connoisseur, and writer, a leading member of the Society of
Dilettanti. His collections were highly varied, but particularly outstanding were his drawings and antique coins and bronzes, which he bequeathed to the
British Museum. He was a leading advocate of the
Picturesque, and his country house, Downton Castle, Herefordshire (1774–8), which he helped to design himself, was novel in being in a pseudo-medieval ‘castellated’ style and deliberately irregular in plan and outline. His writings include
An Account of the Remains of the Worship of Priapus (1786), which some contemporaries condemned as obscene, and
An Analytical Inquiry into the Principles of Taste (1805). See also
Elgin Marbles.
