Juel, Jens (b Balslev, Funen [now Fyn], 12 May 1745; d Copenhagen, 27 Dec. 1802). Danish painter. He had a distinguished career both in Denmark and on his wide travels; he studied in Hamburg and between 1772 and 1779 he worked successively in Dresden, Rome, Paris, and Geneva. After settling in Copenhagen he became court painter (1780) and a professor at the Academy (1784), although he had little interest in teaching. Juel painted landscapes, genre scenes, and still-lifes (particularly flowers), but he is most renowned for his sensitive portraits.
