Ghislandi, Giuseppe ( Fra Galgario) (b Borgo di San Leonardo, nr. Bergamo; bapt. Bergamo, 4 Mar. 1655; d Bergamo, Dec. 1743). The outstanding Italian portrait painter of his time. He spent most of his early career in Venice, where he became a lay brother at the monastery of S. Francesco di Paola. In 1702 he returned permanently to Bergamo, where he lived at the Convento di Galgario, from which he takes the name Brother Galgario by which he is often known. Although he led an isolated life at the convent, he had a large practice and built up a reputation that extended far beyond his locality. His portraits are renowned for their strength and directness of characterization, recalling those of Moroni, his great predecessor in Bergamo. The best collection of them is in the Accademia Carrara, Bergamo.
