Fréminet, Martin (b Paris, 23 Sept. 1567; d Paris, 18 June 1619). French painter, one of the leading artists of the Second School of Fontainebleau. In about 1587 he moved to Italy and worked there until 1603, when he was recalled to Paris by Henry IV following the death of Dubreuil. The ceiling for the chapel of the Trinity at Fontainebleau (begun 1606) is the most important of Fréminet's few surviving works. Italian Mannerist influence, particularly that of Giuseppe Cesari (whom he had known in Rome), is evident in the rather strained poses of the figures, which nevertheless are effectively integrated with the stucco decoration. In 1617 Fréminet married the widow of Ambroise Dubois. Their son Louis Fréminet (d c.1651) was a painter but no works certainly by him are known.
