Epictetus
Epictetus
Epictetus. Greek vase painter and potter, active in Athens
c.520–
c.500 bc. He was unusual in that he was equally accomplished in
black-figure and
red-figure techniques, and he has been described as ‘one of the most skilful as well as the most charming of all Greek draughtsmen’ ( Martin Robertson,
A History of Greek Art, 1975). More than a hundred pieces by him are known, including plates, in which he did some of his best work. Often he depicted a single figure of an athlete or warrior, the pose adapted with consummate mastery to the shape of the pottery. A characteristic example is a cup in the British Museum, London, with a red-figure exterior and a black-figure interior showing a horseman carrying spears.
