Corrente
Corrente. An anti-Fascist association of young Italian artists formed by Renato
Birolli in Milan in 1938;
Guttuso was among the other founder members. The association had no fixed programme, but it was opposed to the provincialism of the official
novecento. The members stood for the defence of ‘modern’ art at a time when the Nazi campaign against
degenerate art was spreading to Italy. Corrente arranged two exhibitions in Milan in 1939, and it published a fortnightly review of literature, politics, and the arts entitled
Corrente di vita giovanile (Stream of Youthful Life), later renamed simply
Corrente. This ceased publication in 1943 and the activities of the group were dissipated by the Second World War.
