Canadian Group of Painters (CGP). A group of Canadian painters formed in Toronto in 1933 and disbanded in 1969. The CGP regarded itself as a successor to the Group of Seven, whose last exhibition had been in 1931, and it aimed ‘to encourage and foster the growth of art in Canada which has a national character’. Although landscape continued to be the dominant subject among the members of the group (who included some of the leading Canadian painters of the time), it recognized ‘the right of Canadian artists to find beauty and character in all things’ and encouraged ‘more modern ideas of technique and subject’.
