Balduccio, Giovanni di
Balduccio, Giovanni di (active 1317/18–49). Italian sculptor. He is first documented in 1317/18, working at Pisa Cathedral, and he was perhaps a pupil there of Giovanni
Pisano. In the 1320s he worked in Bologna, Florence, and elsewhere, and in about 1334 he settled in Milan, where he is last documented in 1349. His most important work is the Shrine of St Peter Martyr (1335–9) in S. Eustorgio, Milan. The Shrine of St Augustine in S. Pietro in Ciel d'Oro, Pavia, is also sometimes attributed to him, although this dates from the 1350s, after his known period of activity. He was an important figure in introducing the style of Nicola and Giovanni Pisano to Lombardy and his work had considerable influence in north Italy.
