Ars moriendi
Ars moriendi (The Art of Dying). A late medieval compilation of texts (prayers, maxims, exhortations, and so on), intended as a guide for the comforting and counselling of the dying; it was issued as a
block book c.1460–5 and subsequently in various editions, including an English translation by Caxton (1491), made from an abridged French version. The block book has eleven full-page illustrations showing a dying man being alternately comforted by angels and tempted by demons to vices such as avarice and despair; on the final page, virtue triumphs in the hour of death. A very similar set of engraved illustrations by the
Master E. S. appeared at about the same time (probably slightly earlier) and both sets no doubt derive in part from prototypes in illuminated manuscripts. The illustrations were a popular source for painters; the deathbed scene in
Bosch's Tabletop of the Seven Deadly Sins and the Four Last Things (
c.1480–90, Prado, Madrid), for example, derives from a similar image in the block book.
