Ancher, Michael

Ancher, Michael (b Rutsker, 9 June 1849; d Skagen, 19 Sept. 1927) and Anna (née Brøndum) (b Skagen, 18 Aug. 1859; d Skagen, 15 Apr. 1935). Danish painters, husband and wife (they married in 1880), the central figures of the artists' colony that flourished at Skagen in Jutland in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, particularly the 1870s and 1880s (Anna's family ran a hotel that was much frequented by artists; she was the only member of the colony who was a native of Skagen). Many leading Scandinavian painters (as well as writers and musicians) were associated with the colony during its heyday, most notably P. S. Krøyer. The Anchers' work included domestic interiors and scenes of the life of local fishermen. Their daughter Helga Ancher (1881–1964) was also a painter. The family home at Skagen opened as a museum in 1967.
