local area network (LAN) A network of microcomputers, printers, and other devices connected together in a localized area, such as an office building. Individual microcomputers (
workstations) are able to use data on their own local hard disk. In addition, they can access data and software held on a central shared unit (the
file server), which also controls the operation of the network.
