creeping takeover The accumulation of a company's shares, by purchasing them openly over a period on a stock exchange, as a preliminary to a takeover (see
takeover bid). There are regulations governing this process and stipulating the maximum number of shares that can be acquired before formal notification must be made and a bid undertaken.
