common law 1. The law common to the whole of the UK, as opposed to local law.
2. Case law as opposed to legislation, i.e. the law that has evolved by judicial precedent rather than by statute. For instance, the rules relating to the formation of contracts is a product of the common law, and is not contained in any Act of parliament.
3. The law of the UK as opposed to foreign law. In this sense, the common law would include case law as well as legislation.
