Financial Services Act (1986) A UK act of parliament that came into force in April 1988. Its main objectives were to regulate investment business, providing investors with greater protection, and to promote competition in the savings industry. These objectives were to be achieved by means of the
Securities and Investment Board and its
Self-Regulating Organizations. It provided legislation for many of the recommendations of the
Gower Report. In 2000 the Act was superseded by the
Financial Services and Markets Act.
